Why Buy a Vehicle in the U.S.A and Import it into Canada?

I have imported several vehicles into Canada over a number of years, and a common question I have had people ask me is “Why bother importing a vehicle into Canada from the USA”. Of course, I have my own reasons, for me it’s somewhat of a hobby of mine, it keeps me busy, it can be fun, I meet new people, get to travel.. ok ok.. The list goes on… But for the average person it’s quite simple. Importing a car into Canada can be a good idea for a couple of good reasons:

Cost: Certain Vehicles in the USA have a lower resale value than in Canada.
Availability: Certain Cars were never put on Canadian markets and yet are entirely admissible to Canada.
Condition: In Canada, most provinces are required to use salt to de-ice the roads. In the USA, certain states where it does not regularly snow, they do not use salt on the roads and therefore cars do not rust, corrode and degrade nearly as fast.

I’m sure everyone has their own reason for importing a car into Canada. Heck, you could be getting a free car from your aunt or uncle who knows! But the three big reasons that drew me to importing vehicles into Canada were cost, availability and Condition.

Toyota Recall of Mass ("Lean") Production

Toyota recall of vehicles has dominated the automotive industry news. The recalls have been advanced to result from an incursion into the foot pedal by the floor mat mechanical sticking of the accelerator pedal resulting to unintended acceleration and anti-lock braking system problems.

By the end of January 2010, a CNN report indicated the recalls arising from the gas pedal problem to have affected at least 5.3 million vehicles. Such huge recalls could be partially attributed to the mass production process that has characterized post-industrial revolution production.

Mass Production Process

That Toyota recalls have affected a large number of the vehicles, can be attributed to the mass production process employed in automobile manufacture. Though subsequently the production of vehicles such as Toyota has been dubbed "Lean production", the massive recalls of its vehicles have drawn some similarities with mass production processes. Mass production is necessitated by the volatile nature of demand that requires producers and suppliers to be always prepared for boom periods. In order to optimize returns especially during a demand windfall; sellers need to have the capacity to produce many items at short notice.

Mass production also referred to as repetitive, series, serial or flow production has become popular in addressing huge demand of products such as automobiles, fuel, household appliances, food, chemicals and mined mineral. The process, whose popularity is attributed to Henry Ford, involves making of standardized items in large amounts on assembly lines. Products which are partially assembled are moved to workers by conveyor belts. As the items move along the production line, they are modified by machines and/or workers through simple repetitive chores.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Mass Production

Mass production confers a number of advantages to the firms that are involved in production businesses. Flow production, as it is alternatively referred to, reduces labor costs and human error since most of the process is highly automated. The automation also increases production rate which reduces cost per unit and ultimately the price. The overall advantage of mass production is thus in helping the company achieve economies of scale with limited resources.
